THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO OPEN A CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE FROM THE SAFE WAY TO SPRINKLING LIKE FORMULA1 DRIVERS DO. BUT THERE IS ONE WAY ONLY THAT MAKES YOUR GUEST REMEMBER FOR SURE. AND NOT BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COSTS OF THE LAUNDRY…

The criterions to open the champagne bottle with a sword called „le sabrage” – are to have a good champagne sword, courage and minimum one bottle of chilled champagne that has not been shaken. I have to admit that the real champagne is from the French province „Champagne” but at least should be made with traditional procedure, that is, „méthode traditionelle”. Anyway, to practice this kind of opening at the first time a simple and cheap champagne will do.

Following below guide it will be as easy as pie.

  1. It’s best if the bottle has chilled in a refrigerator overnight. Chill the neck of the bottlein an icewater bucket just before sabering.
  2. Remove the foil from the top of the bottle. Unwrap and remove the wire cage, too.
  3. To avoid the risk of the cork getting pushed out on its own defend it with your fingers.
  4. Hold the bottle firmly in your clumsy hand at a 45 degree angle upwards pointed in a safe direction away from everybody.
  5. Lay the sword against the bottle and move it slowly to the base of the neck. Go back and forth lightly until you feel comfortable with this mottion. In the meantime tension in the audience is just about hitting the highlight.
  6. With one firm and continuous movement positioning the blade flat exactly on the seam slide the sword down. The lip of the bottle and the cork will break off flying away.
  7. Fill the champagne flute of the guests with a modest smile on your face and receive congratulations with slight nod.
